Long ago, there was an early morning panel that had bagles. These cream-cheese delights were shared by the panelist and those attending the panel. There were many flavors, including a jalapeno flavor, which was popular, and quickly ran out. This panel took place Sunday morning, after staff members had been up all weekend, with very little sleep. In the review of the panel, one Staff member innocently made a spelling mistake, and wrote that the panel could use more 'spicy beagles'. This innocent mistake rapidly became a joke which still contunes, years later.
The orginal staff took the kidding in good humor, and the joke of the Spicy Beagles continued for quite some time, in various incarnations. The Spicy Beagle even became a mascot of NebKon.
At recent NebKons, the Beagles have become a special Department of Staff, dedicated ot attendee relations. Every member of staff of course tries to make sure attendees enjoy themselves, but the Beagles specialize in it. In years past, they've helped out at the registration lines and lines for Guest autographs, passing out water to make sure people in line stay hydrated, and playing little games to help pass the time. When someone's friends were unable to make it and an attendee ended up at the convention alone, the Beagles spent time with them to make certain they didn't feel lonely. In years past, the Beagles worn grey staff T-shirt to be easily identified, or another year wore a colorful blue scarf. This year, check the program booklet or with ConOps for what the Beagles are up to.
